A nursing career dialed my number

Stories - PhoneMy mom has been a nurse for almost 40 years.

She has worked at the same hospital on the same floor for almost 40 years!

She has won numerous prestigious awards. My mom lives nursing and is very good at her job. I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I’ve always liked counseling.

I got a bachelors degree from Auburn University with a BS in Human Development and Family Studies. I graduated and found that I could not do much with my degree, but I loved hospitals.

I worked for four years at a hospital here in Birmingham doing multiple jobs, everything from human resource management to marketing.

I made the decision that I wanted to go back to school to become a nurse.

My mom laughed and said she could never see me being a nurse and having to “wipe butts”!

However I was determined to do it. My parents paid for my first degree but I was own my own with my nursing degree.

I went to a private college here in Birmingham, Samford University, which was very expensive but has an outstanding nursing program.

I worked so hard and never made below a B! Almost all A’s!

I think that since I was paying for my school I had more incentive to make good grades!

I graduated in 2008 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Mom was so proud!

I started off in ICU and found that wasn’t for me. I transferred to the psych unit and from then on I have been a psychiatric nurse and love it.

This all happened in God’s hands. I have worked inpatient and outpatient. I’ve done home health. I went on a travel assignment to work at a psych hospital.

The reason I think God put me in this position was to hopefully save someone’s life through my little brother who took his own life 4 years ago.

It has made me a stronger psych nurse having gone through such a tragedy. I tell patients my story and hope I make a difference in someone’s life.
