Yes, I understand different aspects of pain. And yes, I know the zero to ten scale is arbitrary and, at times, totally worthless.
I enjoy Mary’s scale as well, it is efficient; however, it’s still a zero to ten scale. I have not, yet, found an alternative.
Although this is in a different context, you’ll catch my drift. Winston Churchill noted, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” Essentially, the pain scale is the worst form of assessment, except for all the others.
Now, we must address the patients whom seek drugs-not for relief of pain, but for recreation. Ethically, we must remain objective as possible. It is, in my opinion, okay to discuss your concerns with the healthcare team; however, unless the healthcare team chooses an alternative, we shouldn’t make normative judgments.
I know, it is easy to be cynical. But as Oscar Wilde stated, ” A cynic knows the price of everything, but the value of nothing.”
