Thank you Coiieen for your fresh outlook. It is nice to see enthusiasm and interest in this form of nursing. You will develop skills of observation and intuition that they could not possibly teach in school. May I offer you just this tidbit? Listen to that little voice in your head. Pay attention to that little stir in your stomach. Answer to that second thought. Heed that “silly” feeling. Go with your gut. Error on the side of caution.
May you have a long and safe career. I started 25 yrs ago and have worked all shifts and worked all levels. Balance in your life is the key. You must have a good life outside of work as it can be a very stressful, negative and challenging environment. Correctional nursing is not for everyone.
I love the autonomy and working with custody staff. The nursing staff come from diverse backgrounds with a multitude of experience. At times the care far exceeds the standards of the community sad to say. That is just the way it is. It can be a very rewarding career.
