There are upsides and downsides.
Downside – There are things you need to say that cant be said in front of the pt. When your shift is over you want to give report and leave – when giving report the pt will ask questions and hold up report. Its great they want to be more involved in care, but when you tell the next shift their hgb hct, aptt, other labs, pts interrupt and you have to explain what every one of them mean and the significance it has, it can be long and hold you up. If you have two people in a room – HELLO HIPPA, sure you can ask them if we can talk about them in the open and get consent, but seriously, one time a pts daughter was in the room when it was said they have a history of herpes and genital warts. Awkward.
Upside – You see the pt right away and do a quick assessment right there as well as look at orders and see what isn’t done and what changes need to be made.
