Here in Ohio we dont certify our aids so they are called State Tested Nurse Aids (STNA). Most courses here require you to take the stna course but do not require you to take the test. I have worked in a nursing home for 4 1/2 years and believe that my experience there is helping me tremendously. I obtained my stna through a highschool vocational/trade school and that also helped me because they exposed us to more than just the basic 6 week aid training course work. for a 2 yr program they had to find something to fill up our time with. but i also feel that its better to work as an aid during nursing school not only for the skill experience but it allows you to know exactly what your delegating to your aids. I find its much more pleasant working with nurses that were aids than working with nurses who never were. Makes the day go by easier.
