My wife and I have been married for 4 years and 2 of those years were through nursing school. We have a good relationship but we also have our days where being a nurse definitely contributes to the less than stellar attitude happening in the house. Nursing can be stressful and exhausting and sometimes the last thing I want to do after a long day of being on my feet and being the responsible caregiver is to go home and be a responsible adult.

Nurses tend to form a camaraderie with other nurses because we are the only ones that can understand and I think that means we sometimes push our loved ones to the back burner for a bit so we can decompress with like-minded people. In some relationships this may drive a wedge, in others it will be fine.

I am lucky in that my wife’s mother is also a nurse so my wife understands. I am also lucky that my wife has enough foresight to say “relax because right now you are becoming a jackass” and I have enough wisdom to know she is right and then take a few moments to decompress and enjoy the time I have with my family.
