Gossip is the main form of communication at my facility. I like to counter it by asking about passing rumors at staff meetings because I believe gossip can be very destructive to a floor or facility, and that once the truth is out there it squelches the gossip. Gossip especially bad, (ever notice gossip is rarely good?) can really bring down the moral of the unit and I don’t participate unless stating that I found out by asking management that it is unfounded. If we would all refuse to participate it would no longer be a problem, but of course management would have to increase communication among all the staff including nights and weekends to assist in this process, and we would all have to get out there and care for the patient more so as to not have the time to sit around and chat about others. Oh if only……..
