I was told the reason visitors don’t have to garb up is because they are not going patient to patient, leaning over beds and having close contact with patients like we are. I worked in a hospital that had a protocol stating any joint revision had to be in isolation. We recently had 2 surgeons join our staff that did a lot of revisions (many had been botched by other surgeons). It was getting ridiculous and we didn’t have enough isolation kits. They changed the policy so that we only had to isolate anyone with known infection or drainage that wasn’t contained by a dressing.
