LPN here, been one for the last 8 years after making a mid-life career change. I do love the work, and I love working in LTC, but if I had to do it over again, I would have gone right to RN.
In my area (Columbus, Ohio) none of the hospitals are hiring LPNs or ADNs. They all want BSN graduates. That is pushing the ADN grads into long term care. LTCs are not hiring LPNs at the frequency the used to because they get reimbursed at a higher rate if they have more RNs on staff. In fact, my DON at work is very up front about the fact that the facility is not going to be filling vacant positions with LPNs, but rather with RNs.
The job opportunities are going to favor RNs for the foreseeable future.
As I see it, the future for LPNs is going to be in office positions, home health, and continuous care positions with hospice.
