The worst part for me of having a high ratio is when I have dying patients and I don’t have quality time I can give to them or their loved ones.
A coworker mentioned the other day, “I am a bedside nurse, but this unit doesn’t allow me the time to do bedside nursing”. That coworker is leaving our hospital for that reason.
The high ratios can be frustrating to both nurse and patient alike. Not to mention the HCAHPS scores surely plummet from it!
