I have been signing verbal/ telephone orders for years in NJ..now granted for state to state and facility to facility things change..it does all depend on what is backed by your state license..but the pharmacists is more then likely in the wrong. Some places are really trying to get away from the verbal orders..but to call it forgery..isn’t correct either. The last two places I’ve worked also held the doctors responsible to co-sign all verbal/telephone orders as soon as possible..we would walk the halls having them signing charts all the time. there is a big push for the doctors to put all the orders in themselves…last hospital I was in the doctors would get lazy and not want to log in from home..even though they all could..and call and do telephone orders..the doctors who would do this started to get written up..that was not fun either.
