I have been a RN-ADN for 5 years. All of my experience has been in corrections. I have worked in the infirmary (which is like a med-surg floor) for 1 year, I was a supervisor for 1 1/2 years, and I am certified to handle, mix, and administer chemotherapy with hands-on experience for the last year. I am looking to find another field of nursing as I am burnt out on correctional nursing. I have applied with several area medical centers and hospitals and have had interviews. The interviewers, however, have made comments about my experience not counting, which irritates me to no end. All of the nurses that work at my facility work their arses off, especially the infirmary nurses. The infirmary can house up to 26 inmates and there are only 2 RNs. We do not Can someone please give me any advice as to how to make the transition from correctional setting to hospital setting?
I am in the process of getting my BSN and graduate fall 2014.

Does your resume reflect the type of care you are giving ( comparable to Med surg)? When you are asked about your experiences, how do you describe them? You are getting interviews which is great!! So find some one to help you practice for the interviews, ask hard questions and help you fine tune your responses to questions about your skills. Maybe there is something you are doing in the interview that you need to improve. If you really believe that your experience is equal then you have to SELL YOUR SELF. Best of luck!
