I am in my first semester of nursing school and I also have been working as an LVN now for 7 years. 3 years ago, my little sister was struck by a car while crossing the street. She was in the ICU for several days and passed away at age 24. I was there by her side sleeping in the ICU for 7 days. Now that I am in school again and back in the hospital I can’t help but think of her and her conditions and those last moments. It is good because it makes me really pay attention at times, but then sometimes it’s distracting for me because I start thinking about her to the point that it takes away from what I am learning. My grades are high but other students have commented that I am all over the place at times. Does anyone have any suggestions who has been through something similar? How do you deal with your own personal trauma while in nursing school?
