My daughter was wondering how nurses can handle cleaning up poop, vomit, and all of the other stuff, and still remain calm and not totally grossed out. How do you handle the gross things at work? Is it only a certain type of person who goes into nursing, or do you think we are trained to control our gag reflex?

Jason, for years I guess my gag reflex was trained except for GI bleeds. I never conquered that one. Many RN’s put Vicks salve under their nose.

The last 2 years of my career, I could not handle any of it. I literally vomited at bedsides.
I guess God was with me when this Disabling disease overtook my life 2 years ago, o4r I would still be vomiting.
