We require that the circulating nurse be an RN, and we use surgical techs instead of nurses to scrub in. Anybody out there work in the OR as an LPN? Do you scrub in, circulate, what are you allowed to do in that setting?

In the late 1970’s LPNs scrubbed in, assisted, circulated, passed instruments…did it all… Only a few RNs in small AR towns then…

While I don’t think it’s necessary, I believe it’s a requirement that the circulator be an RN. I have seen LPN/LVN’s in the OR and they’ve always been scrub techs.

I am an LPN on labor and delivery at a military hospital. One of the assignments for LPN is being the scrub tech. We have a M-F O.R. tech and the LPNs cover after hours and on weekends.
