Hello: I just received a private message asking me how best to study for the nursing exams. It has been a LONG time since I have taken the NCLEX, so I’m asking for more advice than I can give on what works well. I know Mighty Nurse offers a free skills testing once a year, but I think she is looking for more of NCLEX prep materials or webpages that provide free practice questions.

I know there are programs out there like Kaplan, and I used a Mosby study guide way back in the day, but not really sure what is the best way anymore … anyone else find something good this last year or two?

    Thanks for your help.

Read up on procedures and steps. I took it today and I had more of that, than anything. I relied more on instinct to answer a lot of items.

It’s not free, but Saunders NCLEX-RN Exam book has a disk in the back, on this disk you can choose the types of questions to practice with…i.e. multiple multiple questions which are the hardest level of question type on the NCLEX.

The NCLEX is a computer adaptive test, the test bank has I believe over 1 million questions. The computer will decide what to throw at you based off the way you answered the last question so keep in mind it’s important to be able to use the nursing process, Maslows etc… to critically think your way to the correct answer, knowledge base is important but critical thinking as a nurse is just as important.

For me, I did not focus on going over knowledge from nursing school in my preparation. I focused on using the Saunders disk and having all my questions be the harder level of questions so I could think my way to the correct answers…this may not work for everyone so know what works best for you when deciding how to prepare for boards.

my name is seun,am in my first semester in nursing school LPN which is a year program ,am having problems with fundamentals questions specifically the critical questions and am doing perfectly okay with anatomy and physiology,i will be glad if I know what to do to improve on my tried several books and practice a lot of questions but when I do the quizzes and exam in class I don’t get it.i wil be glad to helped.
