Does your facility encourage employees to come to work while they are sick due to their attendance policies? They claim they don’t want us to come to work if we are sick, but if it has been a rough year for you and your family, you will go over the magic limit and get in trouble if you call out anymore, regardless of how sick you are.

My facility stresses staying home when sick. The key is to go your primary physician during an illness so that you can have a medical excuse for your absence. There should also be a provision in the policies for prolong illness.

There shouldn’t be a reason to go to your PCP to have an excuse. I know if I’m sick, I should stay home, drink fluids, get some rest … I don’t need an MD to tell me, or my boss, that I have some GI bug or a URI. Besides, most of the PCPs are so booked with scheduled stuff, you can not get in to see them while you are actually sick.
