Many years ago, my PCP and all of the other family docs in my hometown were bought out by the local hospital. Many of them went into early retirement after that, because not having control over your business or even which tests you could order made it less satisfying.

My current hospital has bought out the vast majority of PCPs in town and have turned the MDs from business owners to hourly employees, (I’m not convinced this is a good thing, since the motivation to see more patients per day goes away.)

I have also noticed that many smaller hospitals have been bought out by mega-corporations or hospital groups (Franciscans, Providence, etc.) Do you think small hospitals will survive all of the changes coming with Obamacare, or will only those large enough and who can afford to be compliant in all of the new rules will survive?
