Hi I have been a nurse just over 2 years. I am a supervisor at night in a nursing home that has a TCU unit. I have never worked in a hospital so I have no experience with new trachs, and patients who are such Hugh acuity. I asked my DON the other day for training or something because I am not equipped for this. She advised me to Google it. Look it up on you tube. They don’t have time to train anyone. WHAT? I don’t know how to handle this. It took everything I had to ask for help and admit I didn’t know everything. I was told to go to the administrative director. I’m just scared I’ll lose my job for complaining
Losing the job is better than losing your license or injuring a patient. You have the responsibility to know what you are not competent to perform. Competency takes time, patience, practice, and support. Always put things in writing and this includes the DON’s response when you asked for additional training. Use the chain of command and continue until you get the support you need to safely do your job. If this job is not willing to train you, then it is not the place for you.
