I am trying to decide what I want to do when I graduate! I absolutely love mental health, my first degree was actually in psychology and then I changed professions and went back to nursing school. I would like to work more closely with veterans or active duty military, help those with PTSD or substance abuse issues, but I myself am neither of those things. Does anyone have any recommendations for me, if working for the VA or DOD, what does your job entail and what are your likes/dislikes?

One doesn’t have to have an issue to help those that do. It helps to learn about those issues not just clinically, volunteer at a shelter. Learn what people deal with away from the hospital. It takes time and patience to apply and get hired to VA or DOD. If you want to work there be persistent, don’t just do the one line application, check in with HR and make sure everything is there so your application can move forward. This is a time consuming process. Be prepared for it to take up to several months for everything to go through.
