Fall Nurse Favorites

two-mugsNothing says fall like a cool breeze, cozy sweater, and the changing of the leaves. This is the time of year I miss home the most. Living in another country has removed me from the fall frenzy back home beginning with the overabundance of Halloween costumes and decor and culminating with the savors of Thanksgiving. I love and miss every bit of it! Working in the fall just feels lighter. The following are just a few favorites that mark the beginning of the season.

All Things Pumpkin

Pumpkin latte, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin patch, and pumpkin carving. The pumpkin is the symbol of autumn. This is the time of year when pumpkin makes its debut. Every Starbucks is guaranteed the loyalty of a pre-shift nurse waiting on the premiere of their signature Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Seasonal Candles

Lighting candles during fall adds a bit of magic to the season. As the days grow darker and cooler, a candle can add needed light and warmth. Light seasonal candles on your days off and immediately bask in the relaxing scents and coziness of the season.

Fall recipes begin with hints of pumpkin, apple, or sweet potato making potlucks at work more warm and creative. It is the season of all things cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. This is the time of year to bust out the crock pot and prepare soups for the work week.

Seasonal Accessories

Every unit has that one nurse that accessorizes their uniform with dangly spider earrings, a brightly colored Halloween uniform, seasonal socks, or shoes colored with autumn hues to welcome the season. It always brings a smile to my face when giving report to said nurse.

Days Off

Days off include perusing the pumpkin patch for the year’s best pumpkin, channeling one’s inner Martha Stewart to carve said pumpkin, and buying entirely too much candy for the trick or treaters. Evenings are spent curled up on the couch with candles lit to the theme of Trains, Planes, and Automobiles. Throw in a pair of fuzzy socks and warm cup of tea and all is at it should be.

Here’s to a safe, cozy, and happy season! What are some of your fall favorites?
