Nurse Burnout Recovery

Burnout is not a joke, and any nurse who has experienced this devastating condition knows that it can sometimes be hard to overcome. Recovery, like recovery from any sort of illness, can be a long and arduous process.

Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take to help you recover more quickly and more completely from this condition. It will not be an easy road, but if you remain dedicated to your health and your recover, you should be able to get to the other side with a new appreciation for yourself and for your profession.

Therapy

Some people balk at therapy, but it is a tried and true method for overcome burnout. Why?

It helps you to uncover the reasons why you became burned out in the first place. Perhaps it was because you gave to much of yourself or because your got overwhelmed by the proximity to very sick people.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the reasons that they feel burned out. In addition, they may think they are burned out for a specific reason – such as management – when, in fact, it was more emotional then they realized.

Therapy can get to the heart of the matter and help you find the real reason. This means that you are more likely to truly recover from the burnout.

Job counseling

You may need to face that you need a new job. Not all nurses who burnout need a new job, but it is a possibility.

It doesn’t mean you need to leave nursing, though it may. It just means that you need to consider changing the venue in which your practice nursing.

You need to take a hard look at what type of nursing you were involved with when you became burned out and decide if that is something that needs to be changed. It may just be the solution to help you recover from your burnout.

Self-care

Finally, you need to take care of yourself. Much burn out is caused by nurses not paying attention to their own needs and focusing solely on the needs of others.

If you want to recover from the burn out, you need to take care of yourself just as much as you take care of others. This doesn’t mean that you abandon your care of others. It only means that you take care of yourself, too.

Take time to watch a show on Netflix that you like. Take a nice relaxing bath. Take days off and refuse to be called in. Don’t let your mind be at work when you are at home.

Do things for yourself that you enjoy doing. That is the key to overcoming burnout, because when you take care of yourself, then you are happy enough to take care of everyone else.
