You may think that all of nursing school is about using your brain, but nursing school can take a toll on your health, as well. If you aren’t careful, you can find that it can make you sick.
Nursing students tend to be focused on one goal, and that goal is passing tests. That means studying constantly at the exclusion of everything else.
Anyone on the outside looking in knows that this is not a great idea, but nursing students get caught up in this without even knowing it. Here are three things you need to pay attention to if you want to remain healthy during your time as a nursing student.
You need at least six to eight hours of sleep every night, and that should be consecutive hours. It should not be grabbing some here or there.
Sleep is often neglected because it is so easy to grab an energy drink and keep going. However, not sleeping will affect your test scores.
You will not study as effectively, perform as well on tests, or retain information if you have not slept as much as you need to. In addition, lack of sleep leaves you open to illness and general burnout.
If you want to stay healthy in nursing school, nix the energy drinks and get some sleep. Study tomorrow and sleep tonight.
Eating is just as important as sleep, and you can make yourself sick if you don’t get the right amount of nutrition. Grabbing fast food or eating out of vending machines is horrible for you.
You need to eat three squares per day, focusing on protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. What would you tell your patients to eat?
If you are eating things high in processed carbohydrates, sodium, and fats, you are going to put on weight and make yourself lethargic. For this reason, you need to make sure that you are eating well in addition to studying like a fiend.
Stress comes with the territory, but you need to find ways to get it under control. Some students turn to meditation and mindfulness to control their stress, but this isn’t the only way to overcome it.
Unfortunately, stress will dog you your entire nursing career, and it is best to learn how to deal with it now. It really can make you sick because it can burn you out, make you more susceptible to illness, and keep you from wanting to study.
You can handle stress by trying to balance your home and school life. Life is not all about nursing school, although it may seem like it is.
Only by finding balance can you control your stress. When it seems like the world is folding in on you, take a deep breath, take a step back, assess the situation, and give yourself a break.
