I have been a nurse for over five years now.
There are several common responses from people when they find out I am a nurse.
Some are amazed that I am able to be one, others ask me health questions, and there are a few that thank me and tell me they could never do what I do.
Some people respond with telling me how they have always wanted to be a nurse but never were able to make it to school or something has held them back from their dream of nursing.
Overall, the public has multiple views and opinions on those of us that are nurses.
Yes, we are really lucky to be able to do a job that so many value. Being a nurse is more than just a job or career, it is a life style.
We have to make a conscious choice to go to work every day and do the best we can.
Yes, we make a living while taking care of people but we could make a living doing various other jobs that do not include direct patient care.
I have to say that nursing, specifically bedside nursing, is not for everyone. It is one of the most tiring nursing roles out there.
It is not for the weak of heart or stomach. We spend our days putting the needs of others over our own. So to those that want to become a nurse, a bedside nurse, be aware this is not easy and nursing school doesn’t do a great job of preparing you for the challenges nurses face.
Nursing school is an endurance race, the first step is seeing how much stress you can handle and how well you are able to put others first. The entire medical world is changing and we are all waiting to see the changes still to come.
So to those of you that have dreamed about being a nurse your entire life, yet haven’t made it to school, find a way to answer your calling. We need more bedside nurses and we need those that are doing it for others, not because it is stable career choice.
There are many career paths out there for us as nurses, but bedside nursing is such a noble choice and one of the hardest positions we have as a community.
The rewards of seeing the improvements made in your patients is greater than any monetary value.
There are numerous scholarships and grants available out there for those that want to become a nurse.
I was always taught growing up if there is a will there is a way, I myself have seen this to be true more than once. I personally took a long path to complete school, I knew from the age of five that I wanted to be a nurse and take care of people.
However, as a teenager I thought I knew it all and went down a path that could have lead me to nowhere.
Luckily, I worked extremely hard and didn’t give up on my dream. It was not easy and still today it isn’t always easy, but it was the best choice I ever made to follow my dream and become a nurse.
There is going to be a nursing shortage and we are going to need more nurses to join us in this noble profession.
